At the Bredius estate, you'll find a large image of the name Laur_um. "Laur_um" stands on a spot where a border road ran during the Roman Empire. The space between the letters -r- and -u- refers to a gap in the name "Laur_um" on the Peutinger Map, a Roman travel map from the 3rd or 4th century AD. At that time, there were two spellings for the Latin name for Woerden: Laurum and Laurium. With "Laur_um," Niels Albers invites the viewer to stand in the empty space and form the missing letter -i-, or to remain aloof.
