Castel Sant'Angelo in Rome is a historic fortress on the banks of the Tiber, originally built as a mausoleum for Emperor Hadrian. Over the centuries it has served as a papal residence, prison and military fortress. Today it is a museum that offers impressive views of Rome and fascinating insights into its history. Particularly worth seeing are the magnificent rooms, the Bridge of Angels and the statue of the Archangel Michael on top.

Castel Sant'Angelo has had a rich history over the many centuries of its existence: from an imperial mausoleum to a papal fortress and refuge (I'm referring to the infamous Sack of Rome as a key point here), to today's tourist destination.
