The dam between the 360 hectare Bornhorster Huntewiesen nature reserve with its extensive meadows and pastures is a typical section of the Hunte lowlands. And the Moorhauser Polder
The 100 hectare protected area is formed by a flood retention basin in which natural wet grasslands predominate and which is often under water for weeks in autumn, winter and spring. In Hunteaue, which is otherwise very intensively used in large parts, this area is an important refuge for birds, amphibians and moisture-loving plants, among others.
