The original church, mentioned in the early 14th century, was expanded in the 17th and 18th centuries. It has a single nave with a barrel vault and a choir covered by a dome.
The church was painted by local craftsmen in the second half of the 19th century. G. A. Vanoni created the frescoes in the vaulted ceiling, Battista Paggi the Rosary Chapel, Giacomo Pedrazzi the Chapel of St. James, which was partially restored in the 20th century. The neoclassical altar dates from 1828.
The church contains a magnificent late Gothic fresco depicting the Virgin Mary nursing the Child, surrounded by Saints Antonio Abate and Gottardo. It is considered one of the most beautiful paintings in the entire valley. It was painted towards the end of the 15th century by an artist from the circle around Antonio da Tradate, Gilardoni called "Maestro delle foglie di quercia" (Master of the oak leaves) because of the decorative elements that characterize his work. The fresco was in the portico of a house in Lissoi, a district of Mergoscia, until 1939. It was removed and housed in the church to protect it from further damage. It was restored in the 1990s.
In the sacristy, a cabinet decorated with carvings from 1672 is worth noting. In front of the church is the beautiful cemetery with bell tower (1697), ossuary (1733), a column with an iron cross (1717) and the rectory.
