Since the Middle Ages, under the top of the Badolo fortress, there stood an ancient church called Santa Maria del Castello, which was unfortunately destroyed during the Second World War.
Even higher up, on the summit there was a real castle, owned first by the Bishop of Bologna and then by the Municipality itself. However, in 1306 it was occupied by the fearsome counts of Panico, Ghibellines who, after being expelled from the city of Bologna, took refuge in their numerous mountain castles, including that of Badolo. The Panico resisted the Bolognese weapons until 1363, the year in which they had to surrender to the troops who had the task of definitively suppressing the enemy's presence. At that point they had to surrender, but they received the honor of their weapons from the besiegers. An ancient staircase still remains of that castle, carved into the stone, which today allows you to reach the church of Badolo.
