The Protestant-Lutheran Church of St. Severin in Keitum was built on a sacred hill over 800 years ago. The church is named after Severin of Cologne, a bishop from the 4th century. Next to the church is the cemetery, where the tombs of old Sylt captain families with their stately tombstones are especially worth seeing. Worth seeing is also the largest church organ Nordfrieslands with 46 registers.

The church looks very nice after the restoration and has good acoustics. Inside, a plaster is applied with natural lime. On the gallery remains of old frescoes are exposed. Two years ago we heard a Christmas Oratory in the church. That was an unforgettable experience.

The church of St. Severin is a Protestant Lutheran church in Keitum on Sylt.

It is located on the outskirts of Keitum. In the cemetery many famous personalities can be found and also on the inside the seafaring church impresses with its simple beauty.

It got its name after Severin of Cologne, a bishop from the 4th century. The church stands off the village on the highest elevation of the Sylt Geestkerns. At this point, there was an Odin shrine in pre-Christian times. In 1240 the church was first mentioned in a document. Official investigations of the preservation of monuments have shown that the construction of the roof of the church can be dated to the year 1216. It is thus the oldest religious building in Schleswig-Holstein.
