The term Gaden means something like room, chamber or barn. In southern Germany, the term was used primarily in connection with fortified churches, church fortresses or fortified churches. Windowless storage rooms were attached to the inside of the outer walls of the church fortresses, in which harvest supplies could be safely stored in an emergency in quiet times, and permanently in troubled times. The Kirchgaden were changed again and again over the centuries. After they were no longer needed for protection, large openings were made in the outer wall facing Kirchgasse and fitted with barn doors. These are two-storey individual buildings at the eaves, five of which have basements. The rear sides are half-timbered. Initially they were built as protective and storage buildings against attacks from outside and served as a fortification wall on the street side.
