The first written reference to Varaždin, whose historical name is Garestin, dates back to August 20, 1181 when King Béla III of Hungary mentioned the nearby thermal springs in an official document. In 1209 the Hungarian king Andrew II of Hungary declared it a free city. Due to the Ottoman raids, the defensive structure of the city developed around the fortress, and acquired the shape of a typical medieval river village. At the beginning of the 13th century, the Knights Hospitallers arrived in Varaždin, where they built the church and a monastery. The city is worth a visit.
