    On the first Sunday of September every year, the Arraial da Ponta Delgada, the most important sacred festival in Madeira, takes place in the church, for which pilgrims come from all parts of the island.

      A "slender piece of land that disappears into the sea": this is how Gaspar Frutuoso, a historian and priest from the 16th century, justifies the name "Ponta Delgada" in his work "Saudades da Terra". The origins of this municipality shaped by the sea date back to 1552.

      With an area of 8.8 km², Ponta Delgada is known for the fertility of its soil. This rough but carefully cultivated land is used to produce some of the island's typical delicacies. In addition, natural landscapes with shades of green predominate throughout the region and there is no shortage of attractions in Ponta Delgada.

      The church is quite unassuming from the outside, and does not lure in with pomp and splendor on the inside, but the ceiling frescoes are quite remarkable.
