From 1332 to 1538, a tower of the city wall stood at this location.

The Breda Archaeological Society has made this location visual again by rebuilding the foundation in brick. Take a seat and go back in time.

Historical interpretation: Breda was surrounded by a city wall until around 1536, partly on an earthen rampart, with a moat around it. This moat connected to the Mark on the west side of the city. On the north side of the city, the medieval city wall ran straight through the current Valkenberg park until the 1630s. Of course, there was no park at that time. Outside the city moat were meadows and it was also a wet area, at least in the area that is now occupied by the current park.
After a tree was felled in 1976, the foundation of a wall tower was exposed for the first time. In 1986, this tower was rebuilt on its old foundations. This tower was built up to about 1 meter above the ground and now forms a central point in the park. But this is not the only built-up tower. A tower is also visible closer to the castle moat. This was excavated in 1994 and also built up to the ground. The city wall must have run between the towers. But this wall was not found during archaeological research. That could only mean one thing. The city wall originally lay on an older earthen wall and was completely demolished after 1536. Because the foundation of the city wall was in the wall, it had also disappeared in its entirety. The wall towers were founded much deeper and were found again.
