In addition to the numerous beautiful colonial buildings, the Iglesia Mayor San Juan de Bautista in Plaza Marti catches the eye. The church is one of the oldest buildings in Remedios. The church dates back to the 16th century and construction began shortly after the city was founded. The baroque elements on the facade and the baroque altar were added later. Between 1944 and 1954 the church was extensively restored. To the great surprise 😳 of the population, an astonishing discovery was made during the renovation work. Under the white paint with which the 13 altars were painted, a coating of gold leaf appeared. This was the original decoration, which was simply whitewashed in the 16th century due to increasing pirate attacks. Today the altars shine in their old splendor and create a very special atmosphere inside the church.
