On March 27, 1894, Mr. Olivier Benoit, first warden of the parish of St. François d'Avise da gave a parcel of land, 170 ft by 132 ft, for use as a catholic cemetery. On September 2 of the same year, the rector, Father Athanase St-Pierre, blessed all but a section 20 square ft. This small area was reserved for the burial of infants who had not received the sacrament of baptism, for suicides or for thove who were in serious violation of the discipline of the Catholic Church. In 1896, the cemetery was
enlarged by an adjoining lot, also the gift of Mr. Olivier Benoit: He is buried bere with his wife and children.,
Among those burged in this cemetery is
Maxime Large, pharmacist (1849.1928), who established the "Medicine Sbop" in an old school building. There be produced and marketed patent medicines for cold, whooping corgh, bronchitis, and advanced consumption. He was the originator. of Larove? Syrup
* sold ibroughout Quebec
and Vermont.
Because of a lack of space, as of 1954 only members of families already owners of lots in this cemetery could be buried there.
