The Alsenz rises on the northern edge of the nature park Palatinate Forest belonging Diemersteiner forest. The source is located in the district of Kaiserslautern at an altitude of 292 m above sea level. NHN in Alsenborner basin within the district Alsenborn. From there, the Alsenz flows mainly in a northerly direction through the northern Palatinate mountains.

At their course lie the villages Münchweiler, Winnweiler (here the Lohnsbach), Schweisweiler, Imsweiler (here flows the Moschelbach), Rockenhausen, Dielkirchen, Bayerfeld-Steckweiler, Mannweiler-Cölln, Oberndorf, to Alsenz. Below Alsenz flows the Moschel. About Hochstätten and Altenbamberg the Alsenz flows further to Ebernburg, where it is 110 m above sea level. NHN flows from the right into the Nahe.

The Alsenz overcomes on its 49.9 km long way a height difference of 182 m, which corresponds to a mean bottom slope of 3.6 ‰. It drains a 327.668 km² catchment area over Nahe and Rhine to the North Sea.

From the castle Alsenborn is barely more to see in the area than a reconstruction of recent times, which has little to do with the outline of the original Sali-Hohenstaufen plant (in the system of the swimming pool, the hill was planned and long time only remembered a memorial stone to the castle site). Around the castle was a 12 m wide water-filled trench, which is still recognizable in the area in the northern and eastern areas. In the southeastern area is a Vorburg suspected of a 3 m wide ditch (in the area still detectable) was surrounded.
