In 880, Shanghai British businessmen established Shanghai Water Supply Co., Ltd. in London, England, and built a waterworks by the Huangpu River the following year. The water plant, located at No. 830 Yangshupu Road, was designed by British designer Hart. Construction began in 1881 and was completed two years later. On June 29, 1883, Li Hongzhang, then Minister of Commerce of Beiyangtong, opened the valve to release water, marking the official completion of China's first modern water plant. In the 1930s, the water plant continued to expand, and its area increased threefold, becoming the largest water plant in the Far East, and now the Yangshupu Water Plant. The total area of various buildings in the factory is 12,800 square meters, with brick-concrete structures and different orientations. The shape of the building is in the form of a traditional British castle. The load-bearing walls are made of clear water bricks, embedded with red brick waistlines, and the surrounding walls are pressed against the top of the pheasant. The turning and junction is in the shape of a cement corner stone, like a medieval English castle, especially those decorative elements, which make this building an anomaly among the industrial plants in Shanghai.
