The main religious building of Oman, Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque, can accommodate up to 20,000 worshippers. His Majesty Sultan Qaboos ibn Sa'id ibn Taimur al-Sa'id opened it with all its pomp in May 2001. The construction of the Sultan Qaboos Mosque, whose area covers 416 thousand square meters, took place between 1995 and 2001. The tabernacle itself, standing according to the Omani tradition on a raised platform above the surroundings, has an area of 40,000 square meters and, in addition to a library for 20,000 titles, houses a giant prayer hall.
The pride of the Sultan Qaboos Mosque is undoubtedly the Persian carpet in the main prayer hall. It weighs 21 tons, measures 70 by 60 meters, contains 1.7 billion knots, and 600 weavers from the Khurasan province of Iran worked on it for 4 years. Other decorations include a gilded crystal chandelier and a dark gray marble stove.
