Fort St Elmo (Maltese Forti Sant Iermu) is a fortress on Malta that was built during the reign of the Order of St. John from 1670 to 1693. Located on a peninsula between Marsamxett Harbor and Grand Harbor, the fort forms the northern end of the fortifications of the Maltese capital Valletta

In the middle of the 16th century, the Johanniter built the first defense system on this strategically important headland. When the Ottoman siege occurred in 1563, "Fort St. Elmo" resisted bitterly for a long time and made a significant contribution to victory.

After the great siege, "Fort St. Elmo", like all of Valletta, was turned into an impregnable fortress.

Today the "National War Museum" is located here.

This fort at the northern tip of Valletta existed before the city was founded and was a significant site during the Ottoman siege. Today, the fort is used as a military training facility. Therefore, the numerous tiny bays facing the sea are no longer open to the public. According to locals, they housed female members of the Knights of St. John. The other part of the fort houses the National War Museum, which displays documents from the Second Siege of Malta (1940 to 1943). Also on display are a Gloster Gladiator and the original decoration awarded to the island as a whole, the George Cross, which still appears on the national flag.
