The large Protestant church is housed in an impressive church building. The tower is particularly beautiful to look at. It is worth a visit. The church, which was built between 1785 and 1787, is a baroque central building. However, work on the tower was not completed until 1805. The Great Church is the Protestant Reformed Church of the core city of Leer in East Frisia.
The representative baroque central building was built in 1785-1787 as a replacement for the dilapidated St. Liudgeri Church in the shape of a Greek double cross.
Leer's oldest stone church was built around 1200 at the Westerende near the Plytenberg and was named St. Liudgeri Church in honor of the Frisian missionary Liudger.
In the Middle Ages, the provost church was under the jurisdiction of the Diocese of Münster.
In the course of the Reformation, the parish turned to the Reformed faith in 1525 under the theologian Lübbert Cantz.
From around 1650, this church became increasingly dilapidated and more and more maintenance work had to be carried out.
In addition, the town of Leer had shifted towards the harbor and Leda, so that the church was on the periphery of the community.
During a hurricane in 1777, the pastor and churchgoers fled the building because they feared it would collapse.

Although the church continued to be used, more and more members of the congregation stayed away from it.
