Market Church (1853/62) – Wiesbaden 🚴‍♂️

The Evangelical Market Church, with its five towers, was built between 1853 and 1862 as a neo-Gothic, three-aisled basilica without an upper section. The rubble masonry is clad in brick, and the diverse architectural sculptures are made of fired claystone. The unusual neo-Gothic design by Carl Boos (builder) with its five towers attracted criticism for their allegedly excessive height, but Boos was undeterred. He even significantly increased the towers to 300 feet for the main tower (approx. 98 m), 175 feet for the side towers (approx. 57 m), and 220 feet for the choir towers (approx. 73 m). The main tower, with its height, is thus the tallest building in Wiesbaden. The total external length of the church is approximately 60 meters. The Market Church still largely retains its original appearance today. In 1900, a figurative and ornamental painting in dark, pasty colors replaced the original light interior. After the damage from the Second World War was repaired, the church was re-consecrated in 1949. The stained glass windows in the three central choir windows were also created during the church's further restoration. The current interior painting dates from 1963 to 1964.
