The beautiful Dondra Head Lighthouse is situated at Dondra Head, the most southerly point in Sri Lanka. This Lighthouse is one of four international lighthouses in Sri Lanka, and with a height of 49 m (161 ft) it is the tallest lighthouse in Sri Lanka.
The Dondra Head Lighthouse has operated since 1890. It was built by British engineers who imported all the materials for its construction from England. The white granite blocks came from quarries in Scotland and Cornwall.
The grounds surrounding the Lighthouse are open daily to the public but special permission is needed to climb the Lighthouse.
It is interesting to note that if one travels due south from Dondra Head the first land that would be encountered is Antarctica!
