You will not have missed the fact that Maastricht is located in Dutch Limburg, practically on the border with Belgian Limburg. In other words: Maastricht is anything but - literally - the heart of the Netherlands. The dialect of Maastricht will not get you very far in the Netherlands either.

So what is Maastricht? You can look at it historically and, for example, talk about the connection with Liège and a place in Limburg. But you can also look at it from an overarching perspective. And that is what Maastricht does.

To start with, there is the Maastricht Treaty that established the European Union, paved the way for the euro and created EU citizenship. Moreover, Maastricht is part of one of the so-called Euregions, the Euregio Meuse-Rhine, around the pentagon Hasselt-Maastricht-Liège-Aachen-Eupen. Then there is the University of Maastricht, which gives the city an international dimension. Just take a walk in the city parks on a sunny day. You will also see the focus on that international, European dimension in the communication of various educational institutions.

The philharmonie zuidnederland (previously Limburg's symphony orkest) is the classic orchestra of the provinces of Limburg, Noord-Brabant and Zeeland with headquarters in Maastricht and Eindhoven. Opera Zuid is a small opera company headquartered in Maastricht. There is also a professional theater group: Toneelgroep Maastricht. The city has several theaters such as the Theater aan het Vrijthof (concert and playhouse) and the Derlon Theater (Toneelgroep Maastricht). There are also three cinemas in Maastricht, the Lumière, the Pathé and the Euroscoop.
