The karst soil has always been dry, the water that could run the mills and sawmills was found only in Raša and Vrhe, near Kranjsko. The milling activity was therefore strongly developed until the advent of electricity. At that time there were 7 mills near Kranjsko, in Raša 15 or 16.

Near Kranjsko the mills were hidden in a steep ravine, where the grain had to be transported in bags (to the mill it was carried on the shoulder, for one loaf", i.e. ten loaves of bread). A slightly wider path also led to the lower mills , along which only the largest peasants transported the grain on carts. The monk, called Gorup from Gorupov, was the last to bring the grain by cart to Kazije and return with the flour.

People called the mills descriptively (one-stone mill or multi-stone mill), but also by the local names of the owners (Guštinov, Markov, Hribov, Ožbičev, Gorupov, Škofov, Menihov mlin).
