The patron saint and guardian angel of the church is the archangel Michael, the fighter of the dragon (Revelation of John 12: 7). An image of the angel is on the roof of the porch. On the Roman Catholic cemetery on the Bishop Willebrandlaan is a chapel from 1883 which is also dedicated to the archangel.

765 is the first time a church in Zwolle called. Around 1200, a Romanesque church was built, which was replaced between 1406 and 1466 by today's three-aisled hall church in the style of Lower Rhine Gothic. In 1682, the 115-120 meter high tower from the 15th century collapsed, damaged by lightning strikes in 1548, 1606 and 1669. In 1686, the eight-sided Chamber of Consistory was built here.
