The last take-off from the Kliniska Airport Road Section (DOL Kliniska) took place in 2003, i.e. 20 years ago.
Two years ago, formally, there were only three airport road sections (DOL) in Poland:
- DOL Łukęcin - near Dziwnów - a strip 2,200 meters long and 10 meters wide (in poor technical condition)
- DOL Kliniska - near Szczecin - length 2000 and width 10 m
- DOL Stara Jastrząbka - section on the A4 Tarnów Północ - Dębica Wschód motorway
The latter was created during the construction of the highway, so it is a completely new DOL.
Road Airport Sections are a relic of the past. A few decades ago, DOLs were marked on public roads quite regularly. They were intended to act as emergency runways. They were marked on straight, often multi-lane road fragments, near forest areas.
They were designed in such a way that it was possible to quickly reorganize the road and turn it into an airport. This means that the road infrastructure in a given section is easy to remove (barriers are not permanently attached, no poles, bridges and other road structures). At both ends of the DOL section there are parking lots or wide bays intended to serve as stands, i.e. MPS - aircraft parking spaces.
At its peak, there were about 20 airport road sections in Poland. Planes could not only take off and land, but their ground services, such as refueling and arming, were also to take place on site.
