The pilgrimage legend reports that in 1504 Nikolaus Lemmer from Melkendorf near Bamberg, who was wounded after a quarrel and therefore bedridden, had an apparition in which a figure asked him to hold a small wooden pietà on a wayside shrine with a candle. to visit at Dettelbach. He made a vow and got well again. In 1506 the first chapel was built on this site and the first pilgrimages began. However, these end abruptly in the Reformation period. In the course of the Counter Reformation, the pilgrimages are revived. Today, Dettelbach is one of the most important pilgrimage sites in the Diocese of Würzburg with around 80 pilgrimages registered each year (approx. 8000 pilgrims). The catchment area of the pilgrimages extends into the Rhön, the Odenwald and the Bamberg area.

The widely visible pilgrimage church Maria im Sand with the associated monastery is located on a hill on the eastern outskirts of Dettelbach. Under Prince-Bishop Julius Echter von Mespelbrunn, the current church was built in a historicizing style from 1608-1613. A late Gothic Pietà from around 1500 is venerated as a miraculous miraculous image, which has stood in a glass shrine open on three sides in the middle of a magnificent altar since 1778. 24 votive pictures inside the church from around 1660 testify to his strength.
