Maud’s Trail is a 3.6 mile trail leading down to the I-90, from which one can access the towns of Butte and Anaconda, Montana. This is a great bail out option that shaves off about 6 miles of the official CDT route if you need or want to get down to town urgently. There was no water or camping available along this alternate so plan accordingly. Hitching from the I-90 at this location was relatively easy, however, please use extreme caution if you are a solo lady hiker. A number of lady hikers have reported having uncomfortable experiences hitching in this area. Many ridehailing apps are available for use around Butte and Anaconda, and might be recommended for solo travelers.
