The low is formed by the confluence of the Friedeburg Low and the Neustädter Low, about 2.7 km southeast of Neustadtgödens. It initially runs in a southeasterly direction, crossing under the A 29, the L 815, the Oldenburg–Wilhelmshaven railway line and, at Ellenserdammersiel, Grodenstrasse. The depression then takes a curved easterly course, which was created by mining of clay between 1993 and 2001. The resulting quarry lakes were part of the “Marschen am Jadebusen–West” landscape protection area from 2011 onwards. Since February 2019, the Ellenserdammer Tief and the quarry ponds have been located in the “Pond Bat Habitats in the Wilhelmshaven Area” landscape protection area, which was designated to protect the FFH area “Pond Bat Habitats in the Wilhelmshaven Area”.

The Ellenserdamm was completed in 1615. It enclosed the black brackish area, the ports of Friedeburg, Horsten and Neustadt-Gödens were cut off and a land connection to Jever was created for the Oldenburgers, which they inherited from Maria von Jever in 1575.

In 1662, Count Anton Günther gave life to Ulrich Eilers from Rastede, who had been sentenced to death by hanging for theft, and sent him to the Ellenser Damm for life, i.e. he was chained to a cart and had to do dike work.
