The direction finding tower Kap Arkona refers to a direction finding tower (sea radio beacon) on the Baltic Sea in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. It is located right next to the Jaromarsburg at Cape Arkona on the Wittow peninsula on the northern tip of the island of Rügen. The two lighthouses at Cape Arkona are within sight.
The former naval bearing tower was built in brick in 1927 and served as a marine radio beacon. From 1911 to 1925, pioneering attempts had been made to improve navigation by emitting directed radio waves, especially for the Sassnitz – Trelleborg railway ferry line established in 1909. For this purpose, large antenna fields were set up within the Jaromarsburg. The foundations of the associated radio operation center have been preserved within the castle wall to this day. The technical equipment of the bearing tower was destroyed in 1945. The tower is about 23 meters high.
The bearing tower was renovated in the early 1990s and is open to visitors. There is a viewing platform on it at a height of about 18 to 20 meters, which can be reached via 111 steps. From the viewing platform you have a clear view over Rügen and in particular the Wittow peninsula. When the weather is clear you can see as far as the Danish island of Møn.
