The town hall building was built in 1508 in the Renaissance style and initially served as a municipal wine cellar. After the town had to hand over its town hall, which had been built on the north side of St George's Church in 1484, to Duke Johann Ernst of Saxony-Eisenach, the town hall was moved to the current building in 1596. In 1636, the new town hall was severely damaged by a town fire and rebuilt by 1641; in 1638, it received its characteristic stair tower. In 1812, the town hall scales next door were structurally connected to the town hall. In 1924, the facade was renovated and repainted. On February 9, 1945, the town hall was badly damaged and partially destroyed by a bomb attack. As a result, during the reconstruction that began in 1946, the southern part of the building, the former town hall scales, was demolished and a town hall garden with a staircase that could also be used as a grandstand was created on the now free south and east sides of the town hall. The conversion and reconstruction work and the design of the area around the town hall were completed in 1949.

In 1967, the facade was renovated again, during which the town hall was given the red paint that is still there today. From 1993 onwards, the building, which was now in danger of collapsing, was thoroughly renovated. In 1994, the leaning town hall tower was removed and restored due to dilapidation. In 1996, the southern and eastern area around the town hall was built up with a building complex that integrated the historic town hall and was used jointly by the city administration and the Wartburg Savings Bank.

On the east side of the market square you can see the almost 500-year-old town hall in Renaissance style, although its spire dates back to the 18th century. The building originally served as a municipal wine cellar and has been the town hall since 1596. It owes its current appearance to a renovation in 1996. At the lower end of the tower marker you can still see the "Eisenacher Elle", a cloth measure for dealers and buyers, as well as an eyelet of the pillory. The two coats of arms on the lower side of the archway show the, "Thuringian Lions" and the "Rautenkranz of Saxony".

The old town hall stood directly on the market square, on the north side of St George's Church; it was built in 1484.

When Duke Johann Ernst moved his residence from Marksuhl to Eisenach in 1596, he claimed the previous town hall for himself in order to house his office there. This office building was demolished between 1741 and 1743.

After 1596, the town council left its previous home, the old town hall, and moved its official activities to the previous town wine cellar, which became the new town hall.

The construction of this Renaissance building is not precisely dated. The tower was probably only added during a renovation or new building in 1564.

The relief work was by the well-known Eisenach stonemason and town architect Hans Leonhard.

The new town hall was severely damaged by a town fire in 1636, and was rebuilt by 1641.

In 1812, the town hall scales next door were structurally connected to the town hall.

Before and after 1945, there were repeated plans to redesign the town hall complex between Karlstrasse in the north and Goldschmiedenstrasse in the south.

Before the "900 Years of Wartburg" anniversary in 1967, the facade plaster was renewed. Renovation work on the town hall was already underway in 1978/79.

After reunification, it was discovered that parts of the town hall were in danger of collapsing. Complete renovation work therefore began in 1993. In 1994, the town hall tower was removed and restored.

The old Renaissance town hall became part of a town hall-savings bank building complex between Karlstrasse and Goldschmiedenstrasse, which was ready for occupancy in June 1996. It is used by the Wartburg Savings Bank and the Eisenach city administration.
