The Mauna Kea Trail is a challenging 12-mile (19.3 km) round trip with significant elevation gain, ascending from 9,200 feet at the Visitor Information Station to 13,803 feet at the summit. Haleakala, while lower, provides stunning sunrise and sunset views from its crater rim. Mauna Kea's summit is more remote and requires a 4WD for direct access, whereas Haleakala's summit is more easily accessible by paved road. Both offer unique and memorable experiences.
