The chapel on the Tiendeberg is one of eight ommegang chapels in the village, each of which refers to one of the seven sorrows of Mary; the eighth is a calvary chapel, which probably originated in the 16th century. The veneration of Mary in Westrozebeke was very strong around that time, partly based on the legend that Our Lady laid a red thread around the village in 1382, thus protecting it from the terror and destruction sown by the French. in their fight against the Ghent rebels led by Philip van Artevelde.
