Rising from the floor of the Great Rift Valley like a monolith is the extinct volcano of Mount Longonot that last erupted in the 1860s. A unique feature is the thick forest that lies within the crater of the mountain. The crater rim also provides great scenic views across the beautiful Rift Valley all the way to Lake Naivasha. Potential wildlife attractions at Mount Longonot include buffaloes, elands, bushbucks, common zebra, sometimes giraffe and Grant’s gazelles, extremely rarely spotted are lion or leopard.
If you decide to hike you can park bikes safely with the rangers at the gate.
Though about 1/3 cheaper than the other totally overpriced Kenya National Parks, it is still overpriced at US$ 27 for non residents, more than large US parks but without any facilities other than a 7 km foot trail to and around the crater rim.

There is a $30 campground 1 km up the trail with dry toilets and shaded tables. Instead you can ask Peter, who plans to rebuild his cabin hotel that fell into disrepair during the 3-year Covid-19 lack of visitors. For a couple of bucks you can camp on a nice grassy spot next to the empty pool complex and even get roofharvested clean drinking water
