The castle was first mentioned in a document in 1403 in the Gelderland fief register and was the seat of the noble family of Bocholt (also called Bucholtz), which was influential throughout Europe and whose ancestral seat was the nearby moated castle of Bocholt. The most important representative of the Bocholt family was Prince Abbot Reiner of the Corvey Monastery from 1555 to 1585.

In 1748 the castle passed to the von Bentinck family and other noble families through inheritance, came into bourgeois ownership in 1820 via the Count of Mirbach and later to the Niedieck industrial family. The commercial councillor Julius Niedieck had the villa Haus Erlenbruch built in the southwest of the park.
