The bones - they belonged to three men and two women - were found during excavation work right next to the chapel, which dates back to 1280. The reason for the excavation: a toilet was to be installed for gallery visitors.

The bones date from around 1500. If one were to dig further on the farm, even more bones would certainly come to light, as it was already common practice in the early Middle Ages to create cemeteries next to churches.

According to Lipp, the forensic doctors were able to determine the gender and age of the skeletons. One of the men must have been around 60 years old, the other two were much younger and probably brothers. “The relationship,” says Lipp, “can only be determined precisely through a DNA test.”

In addition to the skeletons, visitors in the gallery can also view finds that were made during the renovation work in the chapel. For example, a stone from the late 13th century with the face of the Madonna of Mücheln. It was discovered when the bricked-up windows were opened, then restored in the Halle State Museum and is now on loan to its new exhibition "Saladin and the Crusaders", which opens this Friday.
