Centrally located on the Kaai in Sint-Amands is a statue of the French-speaking Flemish poet Emile Verhaeren. This is by Leopold Van Esbroeck and was unveiled in 1985.

Emile Verhaeren was born in Sint Amands on May 21, 1855 and died in Rouen (France) on November 27, 1916. He was a Flemish author who wrote in French. He studied at the Sint Barbara college in Ghent, later at the University of Leuven.
Emile Verhaeren's work mainly consists of poetry. Initially he belonged to naturalism, but as a poet he is usually considered to be a member of symbolism and mysticism. Verhaeren died dramatically by trying to jump on a moving train and ending up under the wheels.
