The history of Walhalla Kalk traces its 150th anniversary, from its founding to its takeover by HeidelbergCement AG.

Due to its unique location and deposits of high-purity limestone, Regensburg was an important center of the lime trade in the Middle Ages.

At the end of the 14th century, the lime trade flourished, and the Regensburg Trading Company (Hanseatic League) was forced to regulate the trade and lime kilns through strict guidelines.

The founding fathers of the three independent companies, David Funk, Andreas Büechl, and Josef Micheler, established a joint sales outlet, Walhalla Kalkwerke GmbH, in 1911. Despite continued competition between them, the joint sales outlet was maintained for over a hundred years.

The Funk lime works was incorporated into the Hermann Göring Reichswerke in 1938 and expanded as a supplier to the armaments industry.

After the Second World War, the Jewish Funk family began a long struggle for the return of the shares they had lost during the Third Reich. By the end of the 1960s, they had already concluded various contracts with Portland-Zementwerke Heidelberg AG, which were intended to secure the cement factory's continued existence. In the early 1970s, they also acquired stakes in the D. Funk lime works and the A. Büechl lime and cement works. At this time, Walhalla Kalk was the largest lime company in southern Germany, with 380,000 tons of burnt lime produced.
