Gjirokastra Castle is a testament to Gjirokastra's historical resistance and dominates the city from atop a hill.
The history of the castle dates back to 1336, but it has been subject to various construction phases over the centuries, with various uses as a military fortress and prison.
Today it is a national monument and military museum that houses the tomb of the two Babe Bektashinj, the National Armaments Museum, a historical prison, towers, houses, a clock tower, a church, a cistern and other points of interest.
