On a rocky outcrop in the south of St. Lorenzen, the Michelsburg towers into the sky. This castle complex was built in 1091 - so it is not the oldest castle in the valley, but it is certainly one of the most important in the western part of the Puster Valley.
In the 15th century, the judges of St. Michelsburg acted at the castle. At that time, the castle was the seat of the Michelsburg court, whose administrative area largely coincided with the parish area. After the founding of the city of Bruneck, the Counts of Gorizia in particular supported the Michelsburg and the town of St. Lorenzen, among other things, to represent a certain balance to the city of Bruneck, which was booming at the time.
In 1678, the castle and court passed to the Künigl von Ehrenburg: The castle remained in their possession until 1955. Today the Michelsburg near St. Lorenzen is privately owned.
