Probably a Romanesque church building was initially erected that had no tower and no transept. Presumably at the end of the 13th century, an early Gothic tower was built in the middle of the building. In 1540 important changes took place, especially in the tower. In 1913 the church was modified according to a design by Alfons de Pauw, whereby the side aisles were widened. The transept was also constructed at that time and the sacristy was added in Flemish neo-Renaissance style.
