It is a so-called dead lake, from the last Glaciation of the Vistula. This small lake is opened up by paths all around and can be circled in an approx. 3.5 km long loop. It attracts many walkers because of its nature and the manageable distance.

The Ukleisee, surrounded by legends, is particularly popular in summer for hikes and bike rides through the forests on the lakeshore.

The Ukleisee is about 5 km from Malente and is easily accessible from there via hiking/cycling trails. A short detour to the Ukleisee is a good idea, for example, on a bike tour around the Kellersee. The 3 km long circular hiking trail around the lake is particularly recommended in summer and autumn, as this is when nature shows hikers in all its glory. The densely grown trees that reach down to the shore offer pleasant shade. You can also visit a castle on a walk around it. From the late baroque hunting lodge you not only overlook the Ukleisee, but also enjoy a unique view of the landscape of the Holstein Switzerland Nature Park.

Perhaps it is precisely this nature that has inspired several legends about this actually rather small lake in the Holstein Lake District. I still know the following legend from my childhood.
According to the most famous story, the Ukleisee was originally a lush valley with a chapel in which a knight and a poor peasant girl fell in love. Despite his promise, the knight became engaged to a rich countess, whereupon the poor girl died of lovesickness. On the wedding day, her ghost appeared to the knight in the chapel, who knelt down in shock. A terrible storm broke over the chapel and sank the entire chapel along with the wedding party. According to legend, you can still hear the bell of the chapel at the bottom of the lake on quiet evenings.

Very nice circular route around the lake. The paths are so wide that you can ride next to each other, even if there is oncoming traffic (which doesn't happen that often).
