The Altdorf landmark, Altdorf
The Tell monument, created by the Solothurn sculptor Richard Kissling, was inaugurated in 1895 with a magnificent celebration and its own festival. The event attracted great national interest and the Federal Council even sent a delegation of three to Altdorf. Interestingly, the year 1307 adorns the base of the Tell monument and not the legendary founding year of the Swiss Confederation, 1291. The reason: according to calculations by the Glarus historian Aegidius Tschudi, the Rütli Oath and the Apple Shooting took place in 1307.

Tell Monument and Türmli, Altdorf
The Türmli was built in the middle of the 13th century as a representation and residential tower. Today the Türmli is a monument and supports the Swiss national hero William Tell, who is here as a bronze statue by Richard Kissling commemorating the apple shot.
