What began in 1559 with a certainly simple watermill should be brought to a climax around 2016. Described well on posters, should or should here the hotel "Walhall Lochmühle" arise. Whether the project will be completed, was not apparent. Construction fences were completely overgrown and even so it looked very deserted there.

Unfortunately access to the Lochmühle is currently blocked, but this is not clearly visible from all directions. However, we ended up there and only came across two fences when we left the area. So if you come from Liebethal it is better to keep your eyes open than we are. 😉

A historic mill location. The weir is still there and the branching mill ditch can be seen. A beautiful round arch bridge made of sandstone leads over the river. It's hard to imagine that a new hotel will be built here.

The Liebethaler Grund is a narrow and deeply cut valley in which the Wesenitz river flows.

The Liebethaler Grund is located near the small town of Liebethal, which belongs to the large district town of Pirna. A wild and romantic hiking trail runs through the valley along the Wesenitz river. The famous hiking route "Malerweg" also begins in the Liebethaler Grund, which runs from here through the entire Saxon Switzerland. The largest Richard Wagner monument in the world has been located near the former hydroelectric power station since May 21, 1933. The bronze statue, which is over four meters high, depicts Wagner as the guardian of the Grail and was designed by the Dresden painter and sculptor Richard Guhr.

Built in 1559 as a Lochmühle deep down in the "hole" of the ground, it was destroyed in a rockslide in 1681 and rebuilt upstream. The mill had a daily output of up to 24 hundredweight of grain. Although it was an hereditary mill, it changed hands frequently.

The Dresden court conductor Richard Wagner came here several times in 1846. The roaring weir in the dark rocky ground inspired him to write the world-famous opera Lohengrin. The Lochmühle developed into a popular tourist restaurant.

In 1989, the peaceful revolution came in the middle of the renovation and was soon followed by claims for re-transfer of ownership. The construction work was stopped. After 430 years, the mill, which had most recently been a restaurant, had to be closed.
