The oldest parts of the town church, the foundation of the tower, date back to the 13th century. These parts indicate the former castle church, which is mentioned in connection with the castle in the Hersfelder Zehntverzeichnis. According to the existing building remains, the nave seems to have originally been a basilica with aisles. The hall church, as we see it today, is in the aftermath of the fire of 1718, the church completely burned in, dating back to 1730. Through gifts and donations it was possible in 1722 to install the organ gallery with the mechanical Papenius organ and in 1747 the baroque pulpit altar. Under the sanctuary is the crypt. The crypt is the oldest part of the church. It consists of a 5/8 polygon with a straight west wall. Consider the capstone with its four figures: the Lamb of God, the Lion, the Dragon or Basilisk, and the Crescent with Star. 1939, 1982 and 1986 were extensive interior renovations.

Since July 2005 the Jakobus Pilgerweg leads through Mücheln (Geiseltal). The church of St. Jakobi is thus the last station of Saxony-Anhalt on this route, which eventually leads to Santiago de Compostella.
