This is a monument to one of the founding fathers of Odessa, Duke de Richelieu. It was he, the Duke de Richelieu, who called the legendary seaside city “the best pearl”! It was he who devoted many years of his devotional service to Odessa. The townspeople responded to him with their love and respect: they erected an amazing monument in the best place in the city, on Primorsky Boulevard.

Its grand opening took place in April 1828, and since then the monument to the Duke de Richelieu has been considered the hallmark of the “pearl by the sea.” Despite its solid bronze appearance, it has become a symbol of the city, almost animated by its character.
