The trail from the gorge to the ruin is not quite as appealing. Although you have a beautiful view of the surrounding mountains but a large part you have to go on the road before the forest road comes. And it's pretty uphill.

The castle was built by the bishops of Bressanone or partly to the Brixen, partly to the ministeriality of Tyrol, Mr. Trautson between about 1210 and 1242. The castle should control the way over the Jaufenpass. The first fief of the castle was in 1242 Berthold Trautson the Elder, who called himself de Riffeneke. Jakob and Dietmar were mentioned as his sons in 1249, who shared the possession of Reifenegg, whereby half of the Jakob later fell to the Rottenburgers, who also owned Schloss Moos. As in the 14th century, a reinterpretation of the Jaufenweges took place, the importance of the castle went back.

In connection with the ruins of Reifenegg, a legend is also told, which tells of a ghost dog guarding a precious treasure in the basement of the then Reifenegg Castle. The treasure is said to have been amassed by the robber knights who once lived in the castle. They had attacked, stolen and murdered vulnerable hikers. According to the legend, there is only an opportunity to get the treasure every 100 years.
