One of the castles that you visit on a hike on the Werra-Burgen-Steig. The medieval castle was once the seat of the office Frankenberg, but after relocation of the seat was the castle uninhabited and was set on fire during a peasant revolt. The castle ruins served as a quarry in the following years and today only the foundations of the ring wall and the palace are preserved. The better preserved keep was renovated in the 1980s and today serves as a lookout tower.

The Frankenberg castle ruins are rather poorly preserved, with the exception of the freshly restored keep. This would actually offer a lookout tower, but is blocked off. Otherwise, the remaining foundation walls are mostly overgrown and barely recognizable. The reason for this is that the stones have been reused over the years. The castle was first demolished in 1525 during the Peasants' War. At that time, it had not been inhabited for 4 years. The first known lord of the castle was mentioned in 1247.

Coming from Helmers, you don't have to climb the very steep path to the castle, there is also a farm track up there. To do this, simply follow the Werra-Burgen-Steig from Helmers and turn left onto the Frankenburg-Weg (F). The last few meters up to the castle are still steep and on a scree path. I felt quite unsafe there. Once you reach the top, there is a rest area, another information board and a stamping station for the Touringen stamp booklets.

The castle complex is designated as an archaeological monument. There is certainly a sensational view from the 24 m high tower, but unfortunately it is not always open to the public. A castle festival has been held at the castle ruins on Whitsun Sunday since the 1990s.

The construction of the castle, the remains of which still exist today, dates back to the late 11th to early 12th century. The first documented mention of it dates back to 1137. At that time, the castle was owned by the Lords of Frankenstein, who were first mentioned in the same year. Whether the castle was built by the Frankensteins or how it came into their possession is unknown. The castle served as a fortress to protect the trade route through the Rosatal valley from Frankfurt am Main via Dermbach and Schmalkalden to Erfurt.
The remaining tower is impressive and makes a great photo opportunity.
