Up until 1950, the timber felled in the Rachel forests was transported away with the help of the drift. Over the centuries, that was several million cubic meters. The wood reached Passau, floating freely, via the Ilz.

In 1720 the timber drifts from the Wolfstein forests began. From 1729, under Prince Bishop Josef Dominikus, the expansion of the upper Ilz was tackled. In 1750 the prince-bishop's forests were almost completely opened up for the drift. The Sagwasser near Neuschönau formed the border between the Prince-Bishopric of Passau and Electoral Bavaria. A drift regulation regulated the details of the drift.
