The temple was built at the expense of the Kazan merchant Pavel Alexandrovich Pribytkov, who acted as the customer for the construction. The brick for the temple was donated by the Sviyazh merchant Fyodor Tikhonovich Kamenev. The construction was carried out under the supervision of the artist-architect Pyotr Ivanovich Romanov.
The main shrine of the temple was a particle of the Lord's Robe, placed in a silver cross. According to legend, it was bequeathed to the temple by a monk who died in the Quiet Plyos.
