Church of St. George, Reichenau Island
Catholic parish church. St. George was built after 888 by Abbot Hatto III (888-913).
Hatto, who traveled to Rome with King Arnulf in 896 for his imperial coronation, received the head of St. George from Pope Formosus there. He had the relic brought to Reichenau, where it found its place in the crypt of the newly built church. With the current building, large parts of the original basilica still stand.
Eight large-scale murals in the central nave, more than 4 m wide and over 2 m high, show the miracles of Jesus and illustrate the power of Jesus over natural forces, illness, life and death.
The murals were created at the end of the 10th century. They are among the earliest examples of their kind north of the Alps and are closely related to the book painting created in the Reichenau scriptorium, which also reached its peak around 1000.

Almost nothing reliable is known about the life of St. George, to whom this church on the Lake Constance island of Reichenau was dedicated, but the veneration of his person goes back a long way to early Christianity. A martyr who is equated with George is said to have lived in the third century.
Well known and widespread, however, is the legend of St. George slaying the dragon, usually he is depicted in paintings or as a statue as the conqueror of the monster.
The day of remembrance of the very popular George - he is among other things the patron saint of the English Kingdom - in the saints calendar is on April 23rd.

St. Georg is a late Carolingian and Ottonian church building in Oberzell on the island of Reichenau. Built in the late 9th century, the basilica houses the head of Saint George in its underground crypt. Famous are especially the Ottonian wall paintings from the second half of the 10th century
