        Blessed with a magnificent view, the Nikolaus School high above Assmannshausen has been closed since 2012 due to mold infestation and has since been used solely as a warehouse. There are various discussions about continuing to use it as a tourist attraction for the Rheinsteig trail, pending demolition and replacement with a thermal spa. However, this would require a change to the land use plan.

            "Assmannshausen is a small, picturesque village located at the most romantic point of the Rhine, in the northwesternmost tip of Hesse. With 75 hectares of vineyards, the wine-growing community boasts the largest contiguous Pinot Noir area in Germany. The red wine tradition in Assmannshausen dates back to the founding of the community in 1108. The Assmannshäuser Rote is famous primarily because the vines grow on sun-drenched, steep slopes directly above the Rhine, whose slate-rich soil ensures a particularly racy wine. But Assmannshausen is not only known for its excellent red wine; the town also boasts a lithium-rich thermal spring, which ensured a lively spa business until after the war. Today, Assmannshausen is primarily a recreational resort and excursion destination for Rhine vacationers from all over the world and offers excellent hotels and guesthouses. Nature and hiking enthusiasts feel just as at home here as discerning culinary enthusiasts. Cozy wine taverns, elegant restaurants, and romantic gazebo terraces tempt you to sip Assmannshausen Spätburgunder—one of Germany's finest red wines.
