But there is also a much smaller canal than the Kiel Canal: the "lütten Kanol". In summer, residents can splash around or fish here. In the past, however, small barges drove through here because peat was mined next to it, which then had to be brought to Brunsbüttel. That is why a peat barge can still be seen on the coat of arms of the Kudenseer today.

The small canal (hence locally known as the "Lütten Kanol") was built in 1765 to improve drainage for the lowlands surrounding Lake Kudensee. For a long time, it also served as a transport route for peat boats, transporting peat extracted from the then raised bog to Büttel on the Elbe, from where it was then transshipped, mostly to Hamburg.
